The Philippine Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector

The Philippines has estimated gold deposits of around 5 billion metric tons in more than 40 provinces. Approximately 70 percent of gold produced in the country is attributed to the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, which is equivalent to 28 tonnes.[1] Currently, there are approximately 500,000 small-scale gold miners, and the sector directly and indirectly supports a total of 2.3 million Filipinos.

However, ASGM is largely informal leading to various issues such as precarious working and living conditions; corruption and abuse of power; poor health and safety; gender issues; child labor; and environmental degradation. Multi-stakeholder efforts are underway to help change the situation and provide safe and dignified livelihood to half million Filipinos. Providing solutions to the issues that beset the ASGM sector is what Compassionate Gold, a partnership of the Philippine Fashion Week and NGO BAN Toxics, seeks to highlight. Watch out for our updates!
