‘Compassionate Gold’ and the meaning behind its logo

Compassionate Gold is a jewelry brand launched by the NGO BAN Toxics and the International Labour Organization (ILO) through the US Department of Labour-funded CARING Gold Mining Project, in partnership with the Philippine Fashion Week. The brand traces its roots on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities and the issues that beset the sector such as unsafe working conditions, degradation of the environment, and child labour. 

Its logo represents a heart emblem derived from the T’nalak pattern made by the T’boli people in South Cotabato, where a number of ASGM communities thrive. In the middle of the heart are the letters ‘C’ and ‘G’ in a jewelry-like manner. With the heart and letters combined, it signifies ‘Compassionate Gold’, a brand with a heart championing for better working conditions and safer livelihood opportunities for small-scale gold miners.
